If you're planning a trip to Melbourne but don’t have a clue where to start where to start, we’ve spent 24 hours experiencing all that Australia’s cultural capital has to offer so you can make the most of your time there. From the art food, museums, restaurants, charming side streets and a whole host of quality attractions - we couldn’t wait to get exploring.
After our flights got in early yesterday morning, we decided to get straight out and hit the city. We ended up at Batch Espresso, a NZL themed café for a late breakfast. One thing that we’ve found about Melbourne is that there’s a massive range of food from different cultures available around the city, as well as a whole lot of coffee shops!
After breakfast we went for a stroll around the city. It’s a an amazing place, there are arcades, laneways and graffiti art all over the place and you can’t really walk around without finding something to catch your eye. There are such a lot of beautiful cathedrals, museums and grand buildings to gaze at.
After our exploring, we decided to head towards Melbourne Zoo, the largest of its kind in Australia. It was also one of the top rated things to do on Tripadvisor and great value for money considering. It was only 30 Australian Dollars each to get in (so about £15)! The zoo is home to more than 320 animal species from around the world and native to Australia such as the real-life Tasmanian Devils, Kangaroos and Wombats!
After the zoo - at about half past four - we headed back into the main town and explore Queen Victoria Markets which is also affectionately known as the “heart and soul of Melbourne” which was amazing! It’s the largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere with over 600 retailers! It's a historic landmark with iconic food halls and heritage sheds that should not be missed.
Melbourne is renowned for its high altitude outdoor bars which offer spectacular views of the city skyline, and the Naked in the Sky came highly recommended but based on the research we did and at the looks of most places we could have chosen anywhere and had an amazing meal. From where we sat you could see the Dandenong Ranges in the distance and the skyline looked incredible. Dinner and drinks were incredible, steak followed by Itchy Green Pants Beer and a Green Apple and Cherry Infused Vodka; all in all an amazing 24 hours in Melbourne!
